success in Caber hunting

Postby Sheaf daddy on Sun Mar 16, 2008 3:42 pm

First of all a BIG thanks to Jim Cawley. HurryBurry Farm is Caber Capital. In the last 6 months we have pulled 9 quality Cabers out of there.

A recent accounting and measuring we now have the following. We measured lenth and diameter at the fat end.

1) The Tootsie Roll - 18' - 5 3/4"d definately a Super A caber
2) Hickory - 17' 6" - 6"d Heavy good A caber
3) Red Hickory - 16' 1" - 6.5"d Heavy A caber
4) Poplar 18' - 5.25"d Medium weight B caber
5) Poplar 26' - 5"d Medium weight A, B, or Master caber
6) Poplar 23' 11" - 6"d Heavy weight Pro or Super A caber
7) Poplar 22' 11" - 6.5"d Heavy weight Pro or Super A
8) Poplar 19' 11" - 6.5"d Heavy weight Pro or Super A caber
9) Poplar 18' - 5"d light weight Master/B caber
10) Poplar 21' - Heavy weight Pro or Super A caber
11) Banana - 15' - 4.75"d light B Caber
12) Women's Thick Poplar 15' - 6 5/8"
13) Women's Poplar 16' 7" - 4.25"d light ~65lbs

The A and pro cabers can be shortened to make excellent cabers but we have a couple of B and Master's cabers.

Yes, thank you Mr. Cawley. There is literally a whole forest of cabers out at Hurry Burry. It makes me get all misty thinking about it.

And, we definitely have a nice inventory of cabers. Man, I have 4 in my garage. It is a beautiful thing.

I have a caber that i cut from a locust tree (very dense wood) i would say it is about 18 feet long and about 200 pounds... just curious how would you grade that one?

I would rate that as a Bill Kazmaier caber. By the way, what is your name?

Lol, yeah it is a big boy, but I'm also an amateur strongman so i figure it would be great for cross training. My name is David Marble.

Yeah I would put that at a "cut it a bit and that would rate as a challenge caber for the world's" level caber

You should bring that bad boy out to one of the games. We can see if anyone can pick it and get a pull on it. Is it tapered??

Yeah it is tapered, don't have exact measurements, I might be able to bring it to the richmond games. Of course by then i will have had a bit of practice with it :)

to TheHammer,

sounds like a nice caber...sounds like a real hoss.

it would make a great challenge caber for the pros (or maybe for you!).

here, i have to disagree with Sheaf Daddy...i say don't cut it, leave it at around 200#. remember the Mike Smith challenge caber video (240#).

by the way, just for the record, i hate the tootsie roll with a passion. really. (1. i think we should stick to real logs. 2. it broke a nice caber run i was enjoying!) hehehhe.

hey Bryan, remember those landscape timbers we tossed when you were teaching me the highland ways? good times!

I hate the tootsie roll, too. That is a deceptively nasty caber. I don't think it should be taken out of circulation unitl after I turn it. ;)

So you are saying that it should be a permanent caber? If we break it out at Bridgeport, the tootsie roll will no longer carry the label "unturned."

Mike, are you saying you will turn it at Bridgeport??

Sounds like a challenge to me. I say I can turn the Tootsie Roll before you! So, there. I am calling you out, big dog! A little mano y mano caber challenge.

That's right folks! Your heard it hear. A caber show-down between the two biggest mouths in MASA. Oh yeah, baby!

That is, unless Mike Wills is skeered. :o

One condition....no practice using the tootsie roll before Bridgeport. In that case, then yes, I am saying precisely that I will turn the tootsie roll. Actually, I am already thinking which cabers beyond the tootsie roll might present more of a challenge!!!!

Sounds good, brother. No practice with the TR. The honorable Mr. McClain and the rest of the VMC will attest to that.

There are several good cabers available that are probably tougher. We can pull out the 21 footer the pro's used at Richmond last year. It will be making the trip to Bridgeport.

Want to make it interesting? Loser owes the winner a turkey leg?

I want a meat pie!!! Since we can't control who goes first, let's say the one who finishes higher in the event AND turns it is the winner. If we go simply by who turns it first, you don't even get an opportunity to win.

"The Brute", as I have been calling it, is in my garage drying out. It is actually looking pretty good. I will start cleaning up the pickin' end this weekend.

Mike, we can have someone judge so IF you turn it, too, we can have it scored. :D
