Mr. Stallings,
i used to be big into powerlifting back in late 80's and into 92',but i had given up on power for the silly narsacistic 'asthetic' style.i got married, had kids and later in life started to do a bit of muay thai and then boxing.at any rate,i am not fighting anymore(gettin old) and have turned my site back towards power/strength game.i want to excell at highland games and hopefully do well as soon as i become a master(yr & 1/2) and am also interested in strongman competitions....i have a gym where i train people and teach kikboxing/thai boxing/self defense but i also have been compiling a few implements for strength games.i have a few tires, gettin a 400lbr soon, ropes,a few kegs, just got a steel log, have a sled and a prowler comin soon and a bunch of bands from elitefts.i am getting ready to order a stone mold or two in a week or so.my question is,would you be willing to share some training secrets to me?i was going to enter a naha competition at brute strength on 4/15 but i have no way to train for the wheelbarrow and i dont have a big enuff sandbag yet.i am curious about grip training and frequency of heavy vs. speed days.im nursing a supraspin tear from aug 2010 still and am not able to do any moderate weight for chest(just able to press 95lbs for 2 sets on flat).assuming i cant heal up quickly do you have any suggestions for a strength program having to work around my injury.any help would be greatly appreciated.
my 1rm's if you need em are:
squat-425
deads-365
bench-?????
hang clean-about 185
ive jsut been able to start working out since jan 1 2011...

thanks so much for your time.sorry im long winded-rob

well, first day back at it. did the first highland game of the year on saturday in knightdale ,nc. my performance was not up to par on some events. not making any excuses but the field was beyond crappy, a clear cut, disked,a blown wheat straw + 1″ of rain overnight does not make a ideal situattion to throw in. not to mention the 4″+ stubs sticking up to trip you while trying to spin. anyway pr’ed on light hammer 96′+,got 12,12:15 on caber, weight over bar was a disappointment, i usually am good for 15-16.5′ today i managed 14. weights for distance were horrible due to the fact of being scared to get to much momentum in the spin. but all in all it was great to see the guys and throw some heavy stuff. scott medlin puts on a well run game, and its a pleasure to throw with him as ad and his group of judges!!! southern maryland is up next, and a better performance is on the horizon.

todays workout SQUATS!!

135×3,225×3,280×5,335×3,390×2,420×1,450×12

leg press 600×10,700×10,900×10,1G x8

calf raises 700x15x5

leg ext 100×10,150×10,180x10x2

standing jumps 5×5

prowler pushes for 100′ with 150# x4

worked on trying to spin with the shot………..not a pretty sight!!

well after a crappy week of lifting, i had a pretty good event training day.

stone over 52" bar 220x8 in 60 sec
sled pulls for 100' 250x2,350x2,400x1
conans wheel 250x1rev,350x2,450x1 really need to work on more cardio for this
press and tire flip med
circus dumb bell 110,flip500 tire,195axle,flip,180 log, flip, keg press 170, flip x2 runs then just worked on dumb bell presses. not really doing full contest weight as i am still 5 -6 weeks out just trying to use 80% right now to work on tech. and speed.

broke away from the norm training today and did some event work.
chain drag with 475# chain 50'x2
presses with circus dumbell 100x5
axle 195x2
log reps at 165x6
200x2
also did some front squats 225x3,265x3,315x2

think i have a partial tear on my left oblique, during presses notice a very sharp pain in that area this has been a nagging issue for about 2 weeks that will come and go. i may just rest the next couple days and try to get right as we have a truck lined up to pull saturday afternoon, and i also have a big practice day of throwing early saturday morning.

Took a couple days off this week as i had a contest yesterday. I did the BRUTE STRENGTH GYM HIGHLANDER CHALLENGE!!
Great day!! today i increased the dose due to the fact of having to go all out, i used 3 scoops!

as the contest started i was jacked up like a 4yr old on crack!!
weight for height was the first event 42lbs thrown as high as possible over a measured bar. the masters group which i compete in had a guy that is ranked 2nd in the nation in NAHA!!
We usually have 3 attempts at max height, today myand the above mentioned opener was higher than the other guys 3rd attempt. we threw until one person missed. i topped out at 15 and just missed 16' got 2nd in this event.

next event was a carry medley 2 keg and a sandbag loaded onto steps that increase by 18". the kegs were 185,154,and 200 sandbag all spaced 50' apart then brought back and loaded on the steps 18,36,54"
did great here, jugg had me rolling i ran thru this event in 27 sec. good enough for 1st

caber toss was next. picking up a tree( yeah really) 16' long and 90# i know it doesnt sound heavy but try it sometime. the tree is flipped end over end for a score. the perfect score is 12:00. first throw was a 12,second was a 12:05,third was 12:10 all enough for 1st again.

last event was wheelbarrow run with a chaindrag back
wheelbarrow was 500# for 75', then pull a 500# anchor chain back 50'
did this in 31 sec. good enough for second

overall at this point we had a tie i was awarded 1st overall by using bodyweight to break the tie. the other guys laid it on the line, but like the line from the movie HIGHLANDER says " in the end there can be only one"

let a couple guys try some juggernaut and it instantly sold them they loved it and it showed by my performances on the field.
i had enough energy that when i got back home i still did squats up to 500 for 5.

awesome bro...i soooo wanted to go do that event but was/am a bit worried about how i would do w/o having any implements to train with for the wheelbarrow and chain.i do have a small 'prowler' i could load 2 simulate a drag etc.i giuss im really just gun shy from injuries and a lack of experience.no more excuses...reading your blog and looking at your trainning lifts/weights etc gives me even more motivation 2 drive harder and buckle down with trainning.i got an 18" stone mold friday afternoon and am amped to pour the concrete, bummed i have 2 wait 2-3 weeks for it2 cure but i waited this long right/again tim, awesome on the win and hope to meet you in the near future.

robert, no need to wait 2-3 weeks for it to cure. 7 days is fine, just dont drop it on concrete or any hard surface without something to cushion the fall. i have been making stones for about 7 years, so this type of weather is perfect for making stones. i usually take it out of the mold within 2 days and let it air cure and clean it up some just pour some water over it from time to time after up take it out.
