Questions about conditioning.

Postby JosephR on Sat Jul 19, 2014 7:31 pm

I'm just taking my first steps into the Heavy Events world. I've watched most of the videos in the getting started section, however they seem to deal mostly with the techniques of throwing itself. Can anyone recommend some resources for conditioning? I think I'm going to need to build up my strength in addition to learning the proper techniques for throwing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go here:

You want the Training Lab. I'd also recommend the Throwing Lab for technique. Matt Vincent is currently the #2 guy in the world.

And go here:

Get "Behemoth". Daniel McKim is #1 in the world. Arguably #1 all-time.

Both of these guys are beasts in the weight room. And technically great throwers.

And for technique work, go here:

And get the book/DVD. Mike and Mindy Pockoski are not beasts in the weight room, but they're amazing technical throwers. Before taking a couple of years off to have kids Mindy was probably pound-for-pound the best athlete in the sport.

Joseph - at the end of the day the best way to get "throwing strong" instead of gym strong is frankly getting out and throwing.

For the weights you can do standing throws, single spins, line drills, and Cast and Drops.
With the stone you can do step overs, standing throws, line drills, and throwing a heavy stone.
For the Hammer do lots and lots of hammer winds and single spin throwing (grip and rip).

And always going out and doing puds and drills even though it is sloppy.

Finally - if you want to be a great thrower you need to lift like a thrower not throw like a lifter. That means everything in the gym is about getting stronger, faster, and more explosive.
Trish: Colin go get your bike and put it away!

Colin: Okay but someone is going to swoop down, stop, take a picture and sell it on the internet.
