Standard bar capacity?

Postby T-Rex on Mon Mar 17, 2008 6:11 pm

Hey guys

Does anyone have any idea what the load capacity of the old standard bars is? I have a standrard bar and about 350 or so pounds of standard weight to go with it. I am just not sure what is a safe limit on those bars....

Thanks for any insight...

That is a loaded question. Some of the cheap bars that you buy with the sets at retail stores aren't safe with more than 300 pounds. They are usually chrome and bend even with normal use. Probably an older bar is better quality...but be careful. If it has aggressive knurling it usually is a higher capacity bar, too.

Well I have lifted 515 on those but the bar was bending a bit. The chrome is just plating it is steel at its core but you can get a 750lb test bar. You may pay a bit more but they are a little bit thicker, bend less and the ends spin smoothly which is nice for cleans and such
