It's Scotch on the rocks -- and then some.

Two crates of Scotch whiskey have been frozen in Antarctic ice for a century. Soon, a team of drillers will attempt to reach the vintage booze.

The McKinlay and Co. whiskey was shipped to the Antarctic by British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, as part of his abandoned 1909 expedition. Whyte & Mackay is the group that now owns the McKinlay brand.

The company wants a sample of the vintage Scotch in an attempt to recreate the original. Workers from New Zealand's Antarctic Heritage Trust will try to reach the crates in January
